I don’t know live artists who do this work because they thought it was a practical way of earning a living or because a careers advisor suggested it. It is definitely not leading to financial stability and it can hardly be programmed in advance. My impression is that most people who are ready to put up with the disadvantages of this career are motivated by vocation. However, vocation is a big advantage. In Castaneda’s book The Teachings of Don Juan, Don Juan says, “All paths are the same: they lead nowhere. (…) Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn’t, it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other doesn’t. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. (…) A path without a heart is never enjoyable. You have to work hard even to take it. On the other hand, a path with heart is easy; it does not make you work at liking it.”
